Description: Using an Alta-X drone, NASA recently tested new technology to enable spacecraft to land precisely on other planets and on the Moon. In June and July 2026, NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, conducted tests of an advanced guidance and navigation system known as the Safe and Precise Landing – Integrated Capabilities Evolution (SPLICE) experiment. Developed at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, the system successfully communicated with the remotely piloted aircraft during in-flight hover maneuvers. Detecting and avoiding potential hazards is essential for NASA missions on the Moon and to Mars.
